VINEYARDS

Our number one value is love for the territory.

Cristina Cerri Comi
Travaglino cultivates 80 hectares of vineyards in Calvignano on the slopes of Monte Cérésino in the central-eastern part of Oltrepò Pavese. A hilly area of unspoilt beauty with clayey-calcareous soil on marl and sand, rich in microelements and for centuries suited to growing grape vines.

AN OPTIMAL MICROCLIMATE

Cool and well-ventilated, marked by significant differences in night and daytime temperatures, the microclimate favours the formation of crisp, healthy grapes with excellent acidity: essential features for enhancing the aromas of Pinot Noir and Riesling Renano, which reach unique expressions here.

ZONING

In 1965, Vincenzo Comi, the founder’s grandson, began the arduous job of zoning the estate. The variety most suited to each plot of land was identified in terms of type of soil, microclimate and historic propensity of the plot.

THE ROAD THROUGH THE VINEYARDS

An ancient medieval village founded in the 12th century, Calvignano has always had a propensity for winegrowing, the first documented mention of which dates back to 1240. The name also reflects this: “calle vignato” means “road surrounded by vineyards”.

MONTE CÉRÉSINO

Monte Cérésino, the Travaglino hill

Ten magnificent hectares at an altitude of 350 metres, beneath the peak of the hill of the same name overlooking the Estate. A terrace over the Oltrepò with a south-easterly exposure, with clayey-calcareous soil that enhances the aromas and scents of Pinot Noir.

POGGIO DELLA BUTTINERA

A vineyard exceptionally suited to Pinot Noir, with looser and darker soil than that of Monte Ceresino.

A 3-hectare plot of land at an altitude of 250 metres, opposite the winery complex. The composition of its clayey-calcareous soil with a high percentage of sand and iron, results in reds with intense, spicy fruitiness, good structure and extraordinary longevity.

VIGNA DEL PORTICO

A short distance from the winery complex, Vigna del Portico covers 2.5 hectares at a height of about 260 metres.

Its clayey-calcareous soil on sandy marl is run through with deep aquifers, as evidenced by the presence of wells. The underground water keeps the soil always cool and hydrated, ensuring the grapes have the kind of acidity that is optimal for sparkling wines.

CAMPO DELLA FOJADA

Campo della Fojada was once used for gathering the leaves that collected here, brought by the wind.

The clayey-calcareous soil with sandy marl, combined with a cool, well-ventilated microclimate, produce a Riesling Renano with initial citrus and tropical fruit notes that evolve into mineral aromas as it ages.

OLTREPÒ PAVESE

Thousands of square kilometres of hills and valleys to the south of the Po, wedged between Piedmont, Liguria and Emilia Romagna. An area of trade and commerce, an encounter between the sea, the Apennines and the plain, enriched over the centuries by a wealth of different traditions, cuisines, languages and cultures. With 13,500 hectares under vines, Oltrepò Pavese is Lombardy’s number one winegrowing area, as well as the most important for sparkling wine production in Italy.
It is the “realm” of Pinot Noir, with over 3 thousand hectares under vines making it the biggest by extension in Italy. It was here in 1865 that the first Classic Method Pinot Noir was produced. Today, its DOCG designation puts it at the apex of the Oltrepò Pavese appellation.
